The lyrics:

Zachary Taylor

by Bogartz

I think I had this nightmare back in a night when I was three
I was drowning in a black ocean
Strange folks did stare at me
Now I got lost in the woods
And I remember what that shimmy coon said
He sang “Na na na na na in the woods dwells the devil”

Black-haired woman in the distance looks at me and calls my name
She says: “Zachary son of the south, well very soon you’ll learn my game”
Her mouth too red her legs so thin but I can’t look back to see
My body freezes and soon I know: She’s the Devil. And the Devil is a whore.

They won’t say I’m a fool again, oh no
She will catch me if I move too slow

The woman comes to me and says “well whatever’s wrong with thee?
I could be yer slave for this night or for a whole eternity”
“The divel thee thee don’t thee me” I shout to that woman’s face
Her mouth her legs black hair and eyes oohh! She’s the devil

They won’t say I’m a fool again, oh no
She will catch me if I move too slow
I feel something in my groin, I know
She will catch me if I feel too slow

I feel too weak to close my eyes and I feel too weak to run
But I got a pistol in my pocket I got a pistol and a gun
I pray my God, I take the aim then I shoot to the woman’s breast
Now I’m singing: “na na na na na na na I shot the devil” I shot the devil like a hole.

BOGARTZ

Bio by Jack Tripper

Bogartz' career started in 1998 when Matteo and Lorenzo, who had been together in the last two years in the metal band Splashino, decided to start their own band. In the April of the same year they met Andrea (who was playing in a hopeless punk band) and asked him to join on bass. After two months of instrumental gigs (because the singer was never showing up), sax player Stefano (former member of a jazz quartet) was asked to join (temporarily, they thought), while Andrea was forced to sing .With this line-up, the band made its debut that June under the name of "Alison" at a bikers' feast, playing as opening act for a lesbian peep show. That August, the now-named Bogartz (no one recalls why they chose this name) went in Matteo's Grandpa's garage to record 4 songs with a 4 track tape recorder. The result was the first "Bogartz" EP, which included the hit single (?) "Ladies' room", later included on "Soniche Avventure VI", a compilation by Fridge records. In 1999, Bogartz decided to go into a real recording studio to record the "bogartz II" EP. In 2000, they went back to the studio to record their third EP: "Make me real". Nothing happened, except maybe the worst shows the band ever played. In 2001, losing every will of perspective, Bogartz decided to give a darker flavor to their music, following their own inclinations, and this was witnessed by the shows in the winter of the same year. "It's hard to wave in handcuffs" (named "The ghosts that waved at me" for a small circle of friends and fans in the USA), a collection of their best (?) songs was realized in December, while a video clip of "Sydney" was cut in the hot summer of 2001. Recent news are: The low-fi recording of a "mariachi" EP and this dead US presidents song (which will create the 12' "Zachary Taylor/Diane Lane"). They have also plans to record a double album and to break up after, but knows with these guys (who are always deciding to break up after every drunk show …).

Curator's note:

Bogartz are our token Northern Italian contribution to the dead presidents project, some hard-drinking sweet guys from some place called Darfo. Get in touch with front man Andrea via their Web site -- http://www.bogartz.it/ -- and maybe he'll swap CDs with you. Some pretty good rock music in the Northern Italian underground, it turns out.
